Online Math Activities: By Topics and Grade Levels

online math activities by topics and grade levels

Teaching and learning math can sometimes be a challenge for both parents and children. Parents are always looking for engaging learning activities for their children, especially during COVID-19 when everyone is staying at home. According to The American Academy Pediatrics (AAP) clinical report, educational play is found to have a positive impact on child development (physical, cognitive, social, and emotional). With the rise in focus on the power of play, there are many online math activities that can help children practice math skills using fun, interactive content.

Online Math Activities for Junior Schools

Some of the math topics taught in junior schools include: the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), place value, clocks or time units, money, measurement, and more.

Math Mountain is an interactive online math game that helps children sharpen their skills in math operations. Children who answer simple math questions faster than their opponents (computer or human) can climb to the top of the mountain. This allows children to get used to answering questions within a short period of time as if they would in a test.

The time matching game on Topmarks can help children learn the connections between analogue clocks, digital clocks, and word expressions. When the children successfully match two times, they can develop time sense.

AAA Math is a great place to get interactive exercises on different types of measurements. The website focuses on metric system, symbols, mass, length, volume, and temperature conversions.

Online Math Activities for Middle and High Schools

Middle and high schoolers are usually taught about the math concepts in: fractions, decimals, percentages, integers, probability, geometry, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and more.

Puppy Chase is a similar game to Math Mountain, in which participating children will be answering questions about fractions, decimals and percentages. The faster the children answer, the faster their puppies will run. The first person who finishes answering correctly will win the race. This online math activity can help children understand that fraction, decimals and percentages are interchangeable.

With Kangaroo Hop, children will compete against each other to answer the names of different geometric shapes. This interactive online math activity allows children to practice differentiating between shapes while enjoying the fun.

Toads and Vines game explores probability using a 100-chart of vines and toads. In level 1, children will answer questions about simple probability and get to move their piece. In level 2, they will work with probability of two independent events.

Mixed-Levels Online Math Activities

Besides individual games that help children practice different math topics, there are also multiple websites that provide a wide variety of online math activities. Children can learn basic and advanced junior school math concepts with Sheppard Software. Math Games is another great website for learning K-8 math topics. If you are looking for an all-in-one online math resource, Hooda Math is a must to try.
