For children with special needs, learning math can be both a challenge and an opportunity. At MathProject, we are committed to helping neurodiverse learners, such as those with Dysgraphia, autism, and other learning differences, thrive in their math education. By combining personalized instruction, patient guidance, and innovative teaching methods, we empower students to grow academically and build lifelong confidence in their abilities.

Tyler’s Journey: Overcoming Learning Challenges with Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia, a learning disability that affects writing skills, can pose unique challenges in mathematics. Debbie, whose son Tyler has dysgraphia, shared her experience with MathProject:

“My son, Tyler, has struggled with traditional school due to dysgraphia, a slow processing speed, and some sensory issues related to being mildly Autistic. As a result, he has had a lot of school refusal and many gaps in his education.”

MathProject’s approach to supporting students with dysgraphia includes:

  • One-on-one online instruction
  • Patient and astute instructors
  • Accommodations for handwriting difficulties
  • Flexible assessment methods

Debbie noted, “MathProject gave Tyler very patient and astute instructors and reviewed Tyler’s needs with them before they started to work with him.” She added, “Due to Tyler’s difficulty with handwriting, the teacher will write answers on a digital whiteboard as Tyler dictates what his answers are.”

These accommodations have led to significant improvements in Tyler’s math skills and confidence. “Their patience and accommodation have enabled Tyler to grow in his confidence and willingness to continue and follow through in some of the more difficult areas,” Debbie explained.

The Basharat Brothers: Thriving with Autism

For the Basharat family, MathProject has been a cornerstone of their children’s academic success. Taha and Zoraz, both diagnosed with mild autism, have been enrolled in our program for over four years. Today, they are excelling in mainstream high school math.

“Our goal was to help our children learn and grow academically,” explains Maryam, their mother. “MathProject provided the structure and resources they needed to achieve this.”

MathProject’s approach for students with mild autism includes:

  • Fair and equal treatment of all students
  • Classroom-like environment promoting interaction
  • Additional support through Math Aid Hours

Maryam emphasized the impact on her children’s confidence: “Of course, when a child knows about the subject and can answer questions in class, that boosts his confidence and grades as a whole.”
